Cookie Policy
Every cookie this site sets, what it does, how long it lasts and how to refuse it.
This page describes the cookies Daily AI Brief sets, what each one is for, and how to refuse it. Hosting services and externally hosted article images may have their own data practices.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store and send back on later visits. Some are essential for a site to work at all; others exist to measure traffic or to follow you between sites.
Cookies this site sets
| Name | Purpose | Expires | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
dab_session |
Keeps your session so that security features work — principally the anti-forgery token that stops a third-party site submitting our forms on your behalf, and the sign-in state for staff. It contains a random identifier and nothing about you. | When you close your browser | Strictly necessary |
_ga, _ga_* |
Set by Google Analytics to distinguish one visitor from another so we can count readers and see which articles are read. Created on this site by the Google Analytics script only after your permission. | Up to 180 days (may renew after consented activity) | Analytics |
The session cookie carries the HttpOnly flag, so scripts cannot
read it; the SameSite flag, which restricts cross-site
requests; and, once the site is served over HTTPS, the Secure
flag, so it never travels unencrypted.
What we do not use
- No advertising or retargeting cookies.
- No social media tracking pixels or share-button trackers.
- No device fingerprinting.
- No cross-site profiling, and no sale of behavioural data.
- No third-party font CDN — our typefaces are self-hosted.
Analytics choices and preference storage
Use Privacy choices at the bottom of the page to accept or reject analytics, or change your mind. Analytics is off until you accept. Rejecting or withdrawing stops Analytics from loading on subsequent pages; withdrawal also reloads the current page and removes accessible first-party Analytics cookies. Previously collected data is not automatically deleted by withdrawing.
We save your choice in browser local storage as dab_analytics_consent_v1
for 180 days. This stores your choice and its expiry, not an advertising identifier.
If storage is unavailable, the choice cannot be remembered across page loads.
Additional analytics controls
You can opt out of Google Analytics across every site you visit by installing Google's official browser opt-out add-on, or by blocking analytics cookies in your browser settings as described below. Refusing analytics does not affect your ability to read anything here.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you see the cookies a site has set, delete them, and refuse them in future — usually under Settings → Privacy. You can also browse in a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when you close it.
You can block our session cookie if you wish. Reading articles will still work. Submitting the contact form or the newsletter sign-up will not, because the security token those forms depend on has nowhere to live.
Do Not Track
Browsers may send a "Do Not Track" signal. There is still no agreed standard for responding to it, so we do not treat it as an opt-out on its own — use the opt-out described above instead.
Changes to this policy
If we add a cookie, we will list it here before it goes live, and where the law requires it we will ask for your consent first. The "last updated" date at the top of this page shows when the list last changed.
